The three official Zimbabwe languages heard on your Overlanding Africa.com trip are Shona, Ndebele and English. There are also a number of additional tribal languages such as Tonga, Nambya, Kalanga, Sotho, Venda and Xangani. Approximately 85% of the population is Shona speaking, while about 15% speak Ndebele as their first language.
All three languages are acceptable in education, government and day to day use, however English is generally the language that is used for business - this means that English acts as a common language for all Zimbabweans, and also makes it easy for English speaking visitors to navigate around the country. A very small percentage of the white population may also speak Afrikaans – especially in the farming communities.
