South Luangwa National Park birdlife is extremely prolific, and is one of the top birding areas in Africa. There are over 400 different bird species in the valley and park, including carmine bee-eaters, kingfishers, lilac-breasted rollers, bateleur eagles, saddle-billed storks, crowned cranes and fish eagles. Birds of prey such as the Steppe eagles and Steppe buzzards can also be found.Conservation

With a constant water source, and a lush valley most of the year round, South Luangwa National Park plant life is dense and green. Major ecosystems include oxbow lagoons, wide grazing lawns and associated riverine vegetation, with grasses and savanna found to a lesser degree.Safety Tips
• Like many countries with a high unemployment rate, petty theft can occur in the South Luangwa
• Keep all valuables locked up when you leave your camp or car
• Do not swim in the rivers ' aside from hippos and crocodiles, there may also be bilharzia
• When on game drives, stay in your car at all times except at designated rest stops
• Drive carefully ' roads can be poor and wildlife can appear in the middle of the road so keep speed levels down
• If you are staying near or in the game park grounds, do not wander out of the camp alone as there may be dangerous wild animals lurking around outside camps

Wildlife
As one of the densest game areas in Africa, it is no surprise that South Luangwa National Park wildlife is incredibly diverse and abundant. Some of the main species to be found within the valley and park plains include reedbuck, roan, sable, hartebeest, grysbok, klipspringer and oribi, while large numbers of lion, leopard and huge herds of elephant can also be seen.

If you are traveling alone i suggest the local bus service. However if you are 2 or more i would suggest renting a car or 4x4 for around 150 to 200 USD per day.

Could you please advise on transport to South Luanga. Would it be a good idea to hire a car and drive , we will be coming from Lilongwe, or bus? please dont suggest flying! Thankyou! Rebecca Morris
