Zambia people met on your Overlanding Africa.com trip include a number of tribal groups as well as white and immigrant groups. The population in Zambia is made up of more than 70 ethnic groups, most of whom speak a local dialect. The largest groups are the Bemba, Nyanja, and Tonga people.
A 2005 population estimate put the population at 11.3 million, which may be increasing anywhere between 1.5 and 3 percent per year. The impact of HIV/AIDS makes it difficult to calculate however. About one fifth of the population lives on the Copperbelt to the north of the capital, but the biggest concentration of people is in the capital city of Lusaka, with an estimated population of over 2 million.
