The Luangwa River flows through Tanzania and meanders its way through
Zambia. The river flows through dense open woodlands and open grassy
plains and drifts slowly south west. This particular course has
a number of oxbow lakes, lagoons and dense vegetation on the river
banks.
The Luangwa river covers a massive area and it is the park’s
main source of water. During the drier season the animals flock
to the river as it is very shallow. Crocodile are often found basking
in the hot sun upon sandbanks. You will also find plenty of hippo
in this area. The Luangwa River makes for some fantastic wildlife
photography opportunities.
The park offers a number of impressive viewing areas overlooking
dense vegetation and magnificent scenery. South Luangwa National
Park is equipped with a small village and a quaint bridge across
the Luangwa River. The area is an interesting destination and a
worthwhile stop whilst in Zambia.
