Approximately 1,978 sq km, spanning the districts of Kasese, Kamwenge, Bushenyi and Rukungiri, the Queen Elizabeth National Park is located in western Uganda.
The park stretches from Lake George in the northeast to Lake Edward in the southwest. It also includes the Kazinga Channel that connects the two lakes.
Named after Queen Elizabeth II, the park was established in 1954. Known for its wildlife, the animal population recovered after many animals were killed in the Uganda-Tanzania War. Today a thriving population of hippopotamuses, elephants, leopards, lions and chimpanzees call the park home.
The land around Ishasha in Rukungiri District is known for its tree-climbing lions. These lions are also proud owners of black manes; a feature unique to the lions in this area.
The park has its fair share of volcanic features, comprising volcanic cones and deep craters, many with crater lakes like Lake Katwe.
The Maramagambo Forest is inside Queen Elizabeth National Park. Kigezi Game Reserve runs along the park’s border, as well as Kyambura Game Reserve and Kibale National Park in Uganda, and the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
