Turkey Safety - Is it Safe to Travel in Turkey?

In a country that is renowned for its friendliness and hospitality, people may still wonder about Turkey safety – is it safe to travel in Turkey? Generally speaking, the answer is yes – Turkey is a safe and pleasurable country for travel, whether you are in an overlanding group or doing solo travel. With that said, there are a few precautions to bear in mind, just as there would be in any European or Western country.

The main thing to keep note of in Turkey is petty crime such as pick pockets, muggers, bag snatchers and other random crime that may happen in the cities such as Istanbul or other larger towns. This can be prevented by keeping valuables safe and concealed, and by avoiding dark alleys, especially after dark. Other things to consider are scams (especially for single travellers), stray dogs in the rural areas, wild animals in the rural area and busy traffic in the cities.
