Turkey Religion - Overlanding Africa.com

Turkey religion you may encounter on your OverlandingAfrica.com adventure consists of a predominantly Islamic culture, with a very small percentage of Christians, Jews, Catholics and other religions.

Although Turkey is almost entirely Islamic, it is a secular country, and every citizen is entitled to freedom of belief. After the fall of the Ottoman empire in the 1920’s, and the independence war that was lead by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the principle of secularism was introduced to the Turkish people. As a constitutional right, the law allows people to freely practice any religion; however Islam has been the primary religion for thousands of years.

As an Islamic country, visitors need to respect the culture and regulations found in the country. Women need to cover their hair when visiting mosques, and respect for prayer times should also always be given. The Turks are proud of their heritage, and respect for this is essential when travelling through the country.
