Olympos Culture - Overlanding Africa.com

With a rich history and deep sense of mythology and mystery, Olympos culture seen on your Overlanding Africa.com trip is quite unlike any culture you may experience elsewhere in the country. The region has a unique sense of history, which is evident in the ancient ruins that are slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding forests, with mysterious flame shooting rocks and many interesting myths emerging from this region.

Greek history:

Olympos was an important Lycian city by the 2nd century B.C, and its early inhabitants (the Olympians) worshipped Hephaestos (Vulcan), the god of fire - which was no doubt due to the Chimaera site nearby. The town slowly declined however, and was taken over by pirates until the 1st Century B.C.

Roman history:

The Romans arrived in Olympos in the 2nd Century A.D, however a century later pirates yet again attacked the town. Finally by the 15th Century Olympos had been abandoned completely.

Mythology:

The Chimaera played a key role in Greek and Roman mythology, with tales of a monster with the head of a lion, the body of a goat and the tail of a serpent that roamed the woods sprouting fire from her mouth.
