About Matmata

Matmata is a small village in southern Tunisia where Berbers live in traditional troglodyte homes. Even though Matmata was only discovered in 1967 it's said that the town has a much longer history than that. Rumour has it that in ancient times, the Roman Empire sent Egyptian tribes to make their homes in the Matmata region where people already lived. The residents abandoned their homes and dug themselves cave dwellings. At night the village residents would creep out of the holes in the earth and attack invaders. That's what the word on the street is at least.

Star Wars was shot it Matmata and for that reason it's travellers have been travelling to the area for years. The town is still home to real props that were used in the movie all those years ago.

This village is a place to go if you want to see some really budget housing! People called Berbers lived here (and some still do). They literally lived in caves. Matmata a pretty hilly place which is apparently very convenient for digging out a nice little cave apartment. It also serves well as a hideaway from the constant heat.

Here we get a pretty good picture of the dry landscape that surrounds the city of Matmata.

Matmata's fame as a movie shooting location lead to locations erecting a Hollywood-style sign of the town's name.

Whether you're a Star Wars fan, or someone who is simply interested in unusual architecture, Matmata is definitely a place of interest to mark off on your travel map.
