Tanzania plants range from grasses to scrub, thorny plants, miombo woodland and montane to rich forests that contain more than 2000 plant species. Along the coast, mangrove swamps are fairly common, with alpine moors on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru.
Vegetation in Tanzania
The most typical vegetation in Tanzania is the dry grasslands scattered with thorny scrub and acacia that is found along the Eastern Plateau, which makes up most of Tanzania’s land area. This area includes open glasslands, savanna as well as woodlands, and comprises the Serengeti Plains. Most of Tanzania's minimal remaining true forest is montane vegetation, which is located on the Eastern Arc mountains, forming an unbroken range between 50 and 200km inland. A belt of miombo woodland stretches from southern and western Tanzania to Zimbabwe, and is characterised by brachystegia, acacia and a number of baobabs.
