Tanzania people you may meet on your Overlanding Africa.com trip could be any of the large number of tribal groups in the country. Tanzania has a population of over 26 million people, with 120 African ethnic groups, none of which represent more than 10 per cent of the population. The Sukuma is the largest group, and reside in the north-western part of the country, south of Lake Victoria. The Hadzapi of northern Tanzania are another tribe, while in the central highlands, the the Iraqw can be found.
The roaming Masaai, one of the largest tribes in East Africa, also have a strong presence in Tanzania, and are easily recognised by their colourful attire and face markings. North of the Masaai steppe, the Chagga tribes can be found. Other tribes include a small number of Swahili, plus Timbatu tribes.
