Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania

The area surrounding Olduvai Gorge is also known as the “cradle of mankind” as it is said that it is the first area on earth where humanity appeared as a species. The first footsteps were discovered by a woman by the name Mary Leakey. The gorge is an archealogical site with an ancient history and fossils of humans and animals.

There is a guided tour of the gorge and an interesting museum displaying ancient artefacts and stone tools. Excavations still continue in the Gorge during the dry season and the gorge is home to more than 150 different species of extinct mammals and birds. Olduvai Gorge is a geographical masterpiece that gives travellers a history of mankind.
