Syria Religion - Overlanding Africa.com
The predominate Syria religion seen on your Overlanding Africa.com trip is Muslim, with Sunni being the form of Islam most commonly practiced in the country, by around 80% of the population. There are also smaller numbers of Christian (with Orthodox and Catholic the most common of the Christian religions) as well as Jewish minorities.
Religion plays an important role in Syria culture, and daily prayer calls can be heard throughout the country. During these times, travellers should always show respect and not make disparaging remarks or other insensitive comments. Women visiting mosques also need to observe tradition and cover arms, shoulders and legs.
In addition to organized religion, many people in Syria believe strongly in the powers of good and evil and in the efficacy of local saints. Women especially are more prone to have spiritual beliefs along with religious beliefs, something which could be attributed to women being excluded from much of the formal religious life of the community by the social separation of the sexes and therefore needing to meet their spiritual needs with unorthodox as well as orthodox beliefs.
