Aleppo money & banking is limited, so it’s best to come prepared for your Aleppo visit by conducting your banking in one of the many facilities available in other Syrian towns and cities.
Banking is relatively easy in the larger cities and towns, however certain restrictions may make it hard to perform tasks like cash travellers cheques or convert currency unless done through the Commercial Bank of Syria, which is found in most towns. Credit cards are accepted to a point, with American Express and Diners Club cards being the most widely accepted. Mastercard is accepted in major larger restaurants and hotels.
Banking hours in Syria are fairly regular, with branches open from Saturday to Thursday, generally from 08:00 to 14:00 – most banks close early on Thursdays, so make sure that you get there in the morning to avoid disappointment.
The currency used in Syria is the Syrian Pound, which comes in denominations of S£1,000, 500, 200, 100, 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 in notes, and S£25, 10, 5, 2 and 1 in coins.
