About Malolotja National Park

Malolotja National Park is situated in beautiful Swaziland protecting pristine highveld. Malolotja National Park backpacking tours are ideal for hikers as well as outdoor enthusiasts.

Malolotja National Park Wildlife birdlife includes Highveld grassland and a selection of middleveld species in the Komati Valley. Malolotja is renown as having stable Blue Swallow nesting grounds, along with Gurney's Sunbird, Pipets and Bald Ibis nesting grounds.


Malolotja National Park is Swaziland's second largest conservation area and plays a key role in preserving pristine Highveld which is vanishing fast elsewhere, but which is fundamental watershed area. Malolotja is also part of a transfrontier conservation initiative with neighbouring South Africa's Songimvelo Game Reserve. Malolotja is home to Highveld mammal species including Black Wildebeest, Grey Rhebuck, Oribi, Eland and Blesbuck.


Malolotja National Park is officially outside malaria area, however travelling to/from Malolotja often passes through these areas. Malaria medication includes the following: • Mefloquine (Lariam) • Doxycycline • Atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone)


Being Highveld, Malolotja National Park comprises mostly of montane grassland with small trees restricted to rocky outcrops and natural streams, the tree fern, watsonia and a wealth of wild flowers are a feature. The Komati Valley drops into middleveld altitude and offers diverse broad-leaved savanna flora.
