Gibraltar birdlife is rich and diverse, with some 277 species to be found including Red-throated Diver, Black-necked Grebe, Cape Petrel, Sooty Shearwater, European Storm-Petrel, Northern Gannet, Great Cormorant, European Shag, Grey Heron, Storks, Greater Flamingo, Osprey, Hawks, Kites and Eagles.

Conservation

Gibraltar conservation efforts include dolphin and whale protection, as well as preservation and conservation of the Barbary ape populations which can be found high on the cliffs of Gibraltar.

Malaria

Gibraltar is a malaria free zone, so you will not have to worry about malaria medication, unless you are planning to travel to a malaria zone in Africa or other affected countries. If you are traveling to a malaria zone after your visit to Gibraltar, talk to a local doctor about malaria medication you will need to take.

Money

Gibraltar money and banking info includes the following:
• The currency is Gibraltar Pounds (GIP) and new pence
• UK notes and coins are also accepted and have the same value, however GIP are not accepted in the UK
• Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks or exchange bureaux in town
• All major credit cards and travelers cheques are widely accepted
• Travelers cheques are best carried in Pound Sterling

Gibraltar plant life includes palms and jacaranda, lavender and jasmine, clematis, honeysuckle, geraniums and bougainvillea plus Gibraltar Candytuft and Gibraltar Sea Lavender.

Safety Tips

• Gibraltar has a low crime rate and a large and efficient police force modelled on the British system
• There is a risk of international terrorism and visitors should be vigilant in public places and tourist sites
• There are very few incidences of street crime or violence
• Authorities at the border often delay cars and it's easier to leave your car in Spain and walk to and from Gibraltar to avoid lengthy queues
• Be aware of tricksters trying to sell 'tickets' to enter Gibraltar - this is a common scam
