George birdlife includes some 270 species of birds found regularly in the Fynbos, such as Cape Rockjumper, Cape Siskin and Protea Canary, while other species include Knysna Loerie, Fish Eagle, Bittern and Narina Trogon.

Conservation

A number of George conservation projects can be found at some of the reserves and parks situated around the George area, including Wilderness National Park, Victoria Heights Reptile and Bird Park and Goukamma Nature Reserve.

Malaria

George malaria medication includes the following:
• Malaria is not endemic in George
• You will not need to take malaria medication unless you have entered George from a malaria zone country
• Speak to your doctor if you are traveling between non-malaria and malaria countries
• Do not ever take malaria medication if it is not required, as side effects can be serious

Plants

George plant life is rich and diverse. A number of vegetation including Erica’s, Protea’s Restio’s and Succulents of the Karoo, wheat fields and fynbos, indigenous forests, giant yellow wood trees and wildflowers can be seen.

Safety Tips

• Drive carefully and make sure you wear seat belts at all times
• George is a safe town to visit however petty crime can occur
• Keep valuables out of sight and secure under your shirt in a moneybag
• Do not walk around alone after dark, especially in deserted areas
• Don’t leave valuables lying around in your car when parked
