Mac Mac Falls

Ever heard of Mpumalanga's Panorama Route? If you have, well Mac Mac Falls is one of the main acts. If you haven't, then you've got even more of a grand surprise ahead of you. The Panarama Route is a scenic route of note, and it's got attractions like Mac Mac Falls to thank for it.

It may seem like there is only one steady flow of water to Mac Mac Falls, but they're actually twin falls that tumble down into the gorge below.

Mac Mac Falls has been declared a National Monument with its 65 m high gush of flowing water and unspoiled natural surrounds. For a real slice of the falls, take the chilled 3 km Secretary Bird Walking Trail. Along the way you'll hear the cries of many different birds that call the area home, and catch a glimpse of the pools that trickle their way through the surrounding bush.

If you'd like to experience a little more time around Mac Mac Falls, why not swim in its waters? Okay, you're not allowed to splish and splash directly below the falls, but about 2 km before the falls you get Mac Mac Pools which is a lovely area you can swim in and enjoy with a braai or picnic.

With all that gushing water around you, you may find yourself in need of the loo. Not to worry - there are toilets at nearby curio stalls.  Now you can tackle the steep walk and stairs without having to worry about what happens when nature calls.

Mac Mac Falls used to be a single-stream waterfall until gold miners blasted the rock to help divert the river so that they could work in the reef a little easier. No matter how Mac Mac Falls came to be, it's absolutely beautiful and comes highly recommended as a site to see when meandering along the Panorama Route.
