Johannesburg in South Africa

Johannesburg is the economic hub of South Africa and is the bustling, thriving cosmopolitan capital of South Africa. Johannesburg has old suburbs thrown in with the new, giving them a modern, yet arty vibe.

Johannesburg is referred to as the city of gold as it is where gold was first discovered. Gold Reef City is a town that has been reconstructed to reflect this era and is fully equipped with restaurantsn and entertainment venues. A trip down a mine shaft is a worthwhile experience to engage in. Whilst exploring Gold Reef City it is worth watching a gumboot dance (a dance done by the mineworkers).

Johannesburg is a lively and vibrant city with trendy shops, malls and an interesting history. Also worth visiting is the largest township area of Soweto. Soweto is where former president Mandela grew up (as a matter of fact his house is still standing). Soweto has a huge political history attached to it and it is here where the first uprisings against the apartheid government occurred.

There are so many different cultures and languages existing in Johannesburg that it creates a very interesting cultural melting pot. When taking in the sights and sounds of this great metropolis don't forget to explore the history of the area!
