The Namibia languages you will hear on your Overlanding Africa.com include English, which is the official language, as well as Afrikaans, German and tribal languages such as Oshiwambo. English has been the national language since 1990, when the country gained its independence, and before that during the Apartheid rule, Afrikaans was the official language along with English.
While the vast majority of Namibians are able to understand and speak English, most have adapted a unique variation of this language alongside their first languages. Slang terms abound, combining English, Afrikaans and local dialects for a colourful and fascinating new language that is becoming more prevalent across the country. This language borrows quite a lot from South African English, and is sometimes referred to as ‘Namlish’.
