The seals are actually a species of sea lion, and have 24 colonies along the Namibian and South African coast, with a seal population of about 650 000.
The smell can be overwhelming on Cape Cross Seal Colony budget safaris, and apart from the normal fish and excrement, dead seals account for much of the stench which is particularly strong during breeding season.
