Speed down the dunes at 60 km per hour and enjoy one of the best
sandboarding experiences of a lifetime! An adventure lovers dream,
the Sossusvlei Dunes provide for some of the best outdoor entertainment
in Africa! If sandboarding is not your thing, then try trekking
up the dunes (this proves to be difficult at times because of the
constantly moving dunes!) and marvel at the view of the highest
sand dunes in the world. These dunes set themselves apart from other
dunes as they are red in colour and give rise to some beautiful
sunsets, creating dream-like images.
A popular and alternative way of seeing the dunes is to book a
ride in a hot air balloon. A bird's eye view provides for some exceptional
views of red hue's and an amazing sea of picture perfect colour.
There is a gravel road from Sesriem making the dunes of Sossusvlei
an easily accessible area.
The Sossusvlei Dunes are located in the Namib Naukluft Park and
is the largest conservation area in Namibia that is home to steenbok,
springbok, kudu, mountain zebra and many bird species. There are
several different landscapes existing within one area making it
a fascinating area of contrasts. It consists of the Namib desert
and the wetter region of Sandwich harbour.
The dunes and the national parks of Namibia attract travellers
from all over the globe. Curious overlanders flock here because
of the adventure and unique opportunity to explore one of nature's
true gifts.
