Namibia Overland Tours
When one thinks of Namibia one generally thinks of the Namib desert
but it is not to be forgotten that one of the greatest deserts,
the Kalahari, covers much of the eastern and southern region.
The Kalahari is made up of a huge sand basin that stretches from
the Orange River up to Angola, through Namibia and towards Zimbabwe.
The Kalahari is made up of sand masses that were created by the
erosion of soft stone formations. The sand in the Kalahari is so
fine and soft that when the wind blows it shapes sand ridges upon
the dunes.
The Kalahari Desert is home to descendants of the original habitants
of Africa. The bushmen are an indigenous tribe that live off the
land. They are hunter gatherers who are the real people of Africa.
Unfortunately, the tribes are slowly but surely dying out due to
westernisation and lack of being able to sustain themselves. Overlanders
may be lucky enough to stumble across one or more of these true,
rare Kalahari bushmen tribes.
The Kalahari desert has some stunning sunsets and the vast expanse
of soft sand makes for some wonderful landscape photography. Consider
yourself blessed to be surrounded by rolling sand dunes and colourful
sunsets.
