Museums & Historic Sites in Africa

History and culture buffs can explore the wealth of museums and historic sites across Africa. Experience Africa's diverse and ancient history.

Robben Island Museum

One of the most famous places in South Africa is Robben Island in Cape Town, where former president Nelson Mandela was held prisoner during the country’s apartheid era. The Robben Island Museum is situated at Cape Town’s Waterfront, and boat trips to the island depart from the museum. The island tour gives a glimpse into the prison’s history, and visitors will be able to see the cell where Mandela was held for so many years.

Africa's Historic Sites

Further into Africa, the beautiful country of Rwanda has a tragic history of genocide and civil war, which left the country ravaged. There are a number of genocide memorials, including Kigali Memorial, Hotel Rwanda and Murambi Memorial.

The ancient cities of Morocco have a number of good museums, including the Museum of Moroccan Arts in Tangier and the Dar Batha Museum in the city of Fez.

Egypt is certainly not to be missed, with its huge range of historical sites ranging from the world-famous Pyramids of Giza to the equally famous Sphinx, Valley of the Kings and the Luxor Temple.
