Mozambique Languages - Overlanding Africa.com

You will hear a great many Mozambique languages on your Overlanding Africa.com trip, with the national language of Portuguese spoken by a large percentage of educated locals. However, for many of the unemployed people in Mozambique, tribal languages are spoken over Portuguese, despite the fact that the latter is used for education, business, and legal systems – something that often leads to lack of understanding when locals do not know the language.

Aside from English, which is spoken to some degree, there are an amazing 60 languages spoken across the country. Each tribe has their own dialect, with the most common tribal languages being Makua-Longwe dialects that are spoken north of the Zambezi, and Tsonga spoken south of the Limpopo. Tonga and Shona are also spoken in the central region, while some parts of the northern coastal areas are Swahili speaking.
