Essaouira Budget Travel

Essaouira is situated on the Atlantic Coast, sheltered by the island Mogador, making it one of the best anchorages of the Moroccan coast. Essaouira budget travel is highly recommended on any Moroccan tour.

Legend has it that a Muslim saint called Sidi Mogdoul was buried in Essaouira during the middle ages. In The king of Portugal ordered a fortress to be built there in 1506 and it was named “Castelo Real de Mogador”. Four years later the fortress fell to the local resistance of the Regraga fraternity.

Essaouira remained a haven for export of sugar, molasses and anchoring pirates. During the 16th century various powers including Spain, England, the Netherlands and France tried to conquer the locality.

The festival focuses on gnaoua music, other genres such as rock, jazz and reggae are also featured.
