Djenne Chiini or Western Songhay, is language in Mali, spoken by about 200,000 people (as of 1999) along the Niger River in Timbuktu and upriver from the river in Djenne and other towns. The name literally means ‘towns language’. The language has no phonemic tones, and uses Subject Verb Object word order rather than Subject Object Verb. Another notable fact is that the language changed original z to j.

Aside from this local language, a number of other languages are spoken. Bamana and Jula are spoken by some locals who trade in Djenne and have come from other areas, while French is spoken across the country. English may be spoken to a small degree, but you would do better with French as a solid ground for everyone to understand each other.
