For travellers who are concerned about Malawi safety – is it safe to travel in Malawi? Generally speaking, the answer is yes. Malawi is a safe and tourist-friendly destination, with plenty of friendly locals, no political issues and a relaxed way of life. With that said however, just like any other country in the world (and especially in Africa), it is best to take basic precautions when visiting Malawi.
Petty crime can occur in the busier cities, so make sure that you keep valuables safely locked up and out of sight. Walking around with a camera in plain sight is not a good idea in the busy cities, and the same applies to jewellery and other valuables. Invest in a good money bag to keep your money in when walking around.
Also be wary of scams that every now and then occur at the markets when buying curios – some items are coated with black shoe polish and sold as ebony, and other similar scams. When in doubt, ask your tour guide. Be careful when approaching wildlife at game parks, and do not ever attempt to feed wild animals you see.
