English is the official Malawi language and is very widely spoken across the country, particularly in main towns, but also in many remote rural areas. After English, Chichewa is the most commonly spoken language, and has been spoken widely across Malawi. From 1968 until recently, this was the national language of Malawi.
Other languages that you may here include Tumbuka, which is spoken by about 500,000 people in the north, as well as Yao, which is spoken by about 600,000 people in the south of the country. Lomwe is also spoken to a lesser degree around Malawi.
