About Ghadames

You'll find the city of Ghadames southwest of Tripoli, near Algeria and Tunisia. It's an oasis town that has a population mainly made up of Berbers. Ghadames is knows as the pearl of the desert and is one of the oldest pre-Saharan cities around.

Traditional home in Ghadames

Here we have the inside of a traditional home within Libya's Ghadames. This living space is a common layout in terms of decor in the homes of those who live here. Ghadames is a brilliant example of a traditional settlement with Berbers standing as the majority of the population.

Running around what is known as the old part of town is the city wall which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Ghadames is most definitely an old city bursting with its own character and atmosphere. If for anything, visit the town for a glimpse of the architecture and the multi-level approach to their living and storage.
