Beirut Safety - Is it Safe to Travel in Beirut?
For those wondering about Beirut safety - is it safe to travel in Beirut? Since 2009, Beirut has become a safe place and the number of tourists is dramatically increasing (more than 2 million in 2009). The US government's warning to travelers visiting Lebanon was lifted in mid-September 2009. The violence in Naher al-Bared has ceased. Beirut itself is safe, but avoid South Beirut if there is too much political discord with Israel. Baal-beck is safe, but also visit with caution for it is a Hizbollah stronghold. The mountain cities around Beirut and in the North are generally safe but always be on the lookout for political turmoil. Try to at least have a vague idea of the political situation, which is volatile. Try to avoid any political demonstrations. The South has a high level of Hizbollah influence/control but is by no means off-limits. Be aware that the South has a high Shia Muslim population and dress and act conservatively.
Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon are approachable, but try to bring a local. She/he will be worth a lot when it comes to logistics and safety. Camps vary in size and appearance (the camps in Beirut are worse than some rural camps, which can resemble more open villages). Most refugees however are both civil and open in the encounter with foreigners. The key is of course openness on your part as well. Of course, Downtown Beirut will always be a safer alternative, but for the most part you won't encounter any problems while in a refugee camp.
