It may seem daunting going through Kenya customs – OverlandingAfrica.com has some tips and guidelines to make the process easier and quicker however.
While certain items are allowed into the country in small amounts, such as perfume, alcohol and tobacco, other items have strict restrictions or prohibitions. Make sure you follow these guidelines carefully to avoid any delays or problems at customs.
The following items are restricted or prohibited for import and / or export in Kenya:
- Fruit and other perishable food items
- Imitation firearms or children’s toy pistols
- Meat and meat products
- Any product from domestic or wild poultry
- Plants and plant cuttings must be declared
- Ammunition and firearms require a police permit
- Skin or game trophies require an export permit
Travellers may export local and foreign Kenyan Shilling (KES) currency without restrictions, but for amounts equivalent to USD 5,000 and over, visitors need to present documents indicating the source and purpose of this amount.
