Wadi Rum Desert Conservation

Wadi Rum Desert conservation is critical to protect this almost untouched desert valley. The establishment of a protected area at Wadi Rum Desert was first proposed by IUCN/WWF in 1978. Just over a decade later, the National Environmental strategy for Jordan rated that a Wadi Rum Desert Protected Area warranted 'top priority' status. The Rum Protected Area was subsequently selected as one of the four sites in Jordan to receive financial and technical assistance in the form of the World Bank Second Tourism Development Project.

Preservation Wadi Rum Desert is essential, as the area supports a range of ecologically sensitive habitats and species, many of which are rare and endangered, with a number of medicinal or beneficial plant species that are used by the Bedouin tribes within the area as a source of food, medicine or wood.
