Aqaba Plants

Aqaba plants are typical of most of the country: scattered olive groves and other trees and wildflowers in some areas especially during the rainy season in Spring. During this period, it is possible to see lilies, irises, orchids and tulips, although smaller wildflowers and flowering succulents are more commonly seen. To the north of Aqaba the region lies the desert, and very little plant life is to be found. As a sharp contrast to the sparse plant life inland, Aqaba coastal and marine plant life is rich and exotic. The warm, clear oxygen-rich waters are home to many different seaweed species, as well as other aquatic plants. Coral, which is not a plant, abounds in the warm waters, and it is this resource, coupled with the seaweeds which provide a habitat for an exciting biodiversity. Microscopic plant life is also present in the tropical waters, although this is of little interest to the average scuba diver. Within the city limits of Aqaba, there are lush gardens, especially in the hotels, and a “greening” project to plant trees and attract birdlife has been undertaken by the local ornithological society.

Vegetation in Aqaba is typically sparse in its natural state; however cultivated wildflowers are present in the gardens of the city. Occasional trees dot the landscape, but mostly the region is home to only the hardier kinds of plants which can cope with the arid environment.
