Aqaba Conservation

Aqaba conservation is taken very seriously by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. Founded in 1966, the RSCN was the first non-governmental organization of its kind in the Arab world. The Society addresses a wide range of environmental concerns, but its primary concern is for the preservation of wildlife both on the Jordanian mainland and in Aqaba’s coral reefs and coastline. As Aqaba is a major tourism centre and the country’s only port, plans for preserving this natural treasure have necessarily been combined with the region’s economic and social development. Jordan’s early commitment to sustainable development has facilitated this combination, as environmental regulation has been instituted relatively early in the industrialization process.

Preservation Aqaba

Preservation in Aqaba focuses on preserving the unique coastal ecosystems by limiting the damage from industrialisation, in particular, shipping. A multi-national initiative exists between four countries bordering the Gulf of Aqaba which seeks to enforce environmental protection measures and promote marine resource management.
