A day-by-day breakdown of what to expect and where you'll be staying.
Day 1 to 2, Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar
A winding route over the Ethiopian Plateau take us towards our campsite at Bahir Dar.We stop for lunch at Debre Libanso on the way. Perched on the edge of Lake Tana makes for a deep blue backdrop to tonights camp. Check out the fish market or some of the ancient churches on one of the 37 islands on Lake Tana.
Day 3 to 4, Bahir Dar to the Simien Mountains National Park
After leaving Bahir Dar we head for Gonder - the first capital city of the Ethiopian Empire and home of some impressive ancient African architecture. Time to explore the famous Gonder castles and visit a Woleka village before continuing to the Simien Mountain National Park.
Day 5, Simien Mountains to Axum
We pass the Limalimo Mountain range and cross the Tekeze Valley on the way to Axum - possible home of the Ark of the Covenant the site of Ethiopia's most ancient city, historical home of the Queen of Sheba and keeper of the crowns of Emperors. Whew! The next day we tour the ruins of the 2700 year old city of Yeha.
Day 6, Axum to Mekele
Beautiful panoramic roads lead us to the 2700 year old city of Yeha and its impressive temple before we arrive at the oldest church in Ethiopia - the Debre Damo monastery. We reach Mekele in time for dinner.
Day 7 to 8, Mekele to Lalibela
An all day drive on unpaved roads will get us to Lalibela late in the afternoon. The dry landscape climbs to 3000m+ before dropping down into river valleys - stunning! One of the holiest cities in the world, Lalibela is home to sub-ground-level churches carved from solid rock and we have the chance to explore.
Day 9 to 10, Lalibela to Addis Ababa
As we travel back to Addis we pass through the homelands of Afar shepherds and recross the Ethiopian Plateau before our tour finishes on arrival.
