Ghana Safety - Is it Safe to Travel in Ghana?

Many travellers wonder about Ghana safety – is it safe to travel in Ghana?

Generally, Ghana is a safe country which had peaceful recent elections and has not had too much unrest in recent years.

Tribal differences and other issues could rise at any time however, so it is best to stay cautious and avoid large crowds and demonstrations which may turn violent.

Crime is fairly low in Ghana; however petty crime such as pick pocketing and theft can sometimes occur, so keep your valuables out of sight and safely under your shirt.

Women should be careful not to walk around the beach areas alone, or walk alone anywhere after dark. The public beaches have been known to have theft or sexual harassment occur, so be careful when visiting these areas.

Some parts of the country, such as the villages of Bawku and Gushegu still have unrest and issues, and these villages have imposed a curfew between 22h00 and 04h00. If you are travelling to these areas, make sure you get there before 10h00.
