Ghana's People

There are five major tribes making up Ghana's people – OverlandingAfrica.com tours give you a chance to encounter some of these groups, who have a wide range of dialects and cultures.

Ghana’s main tribal groups include the Akan, the Ewe, MoleDagbane , the Guan, and the Ga-Adangbe, with a number of smaller tribal groups to be found across the country.

At just under half the population, the Akran tribe is the largest in the country, and can be found across the entire south and west of the Volta.  Within the Akran tribe there are a number of small groups, including the coastal Akran (Fante), the oldest Akran tribe (Bono or Brong) and others including Akwamu, Asante (who are the largest Akran tribe in Ghana today), Akyem and Denkyira.

The Ewe tribes can be found in the south-eastern parts of Ghana, and are traditionally farmers and fishermen.

The Ga-Adangbe people inhabit the Accra Plains. The Adangbe are found in the east, while the Ga groups are situated in the west of the Accra coastlands.
