Ghana Money & Banking

Ghana money & banking is a lot more accessible than other West African countries, and many large hotels, restaurants or even stores accept credit cards.

Large cities and urban areas such as Accra or Kumasi have a number of ATM’s which accept Visa cards, but travellers should be careful when using credit cards as scams and fraud have recently become a problem with tourists in Ghana.

Travellers cheques can be exchanged fairly easily at bureau de change branches or banks, as well as major hotels and airports, while rates are fairly good it can be harder to exchange currency other than Dollars, Euros or Pounds.

Banks include Barclays, Standard Chartered, Stanbic, Ghana Commercial Bank and Zenith Bank, and banking hours are generally Monday to Thursday from 08h00 until 14h00, and on Fridays from 08h00 until 15h00.

Ghana local currency is the Ghana Cedi (GHS) and pesewas, which are in denominations of GHS 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 for notes, with coins in denominations of GHS 1 and 50, 20, 10, 5 and 1 pesewas.
