Ghana Languages

With a large number of tribes, it is no wonder that there are such a wide number of Ghana languages – OverlandingAfrica.com tours will allow you the chance to meet people who speak anything from English to Ewe.

As is the case with many colonised countries who take their official language from the country of their colonial rule, Ghana’s official language is the colonial language of English. This language is widely spoken amongst almost all tribal groups, and is taught in schools as well as used in official and government documents.

Akan, as the language of the largest tribal group in the country, is also spoken fairly widely, and is one of the recognised major languages in Ghana.

Ga is spoken in south-eastern Ghana, in and around the capital Accra, and is one of the Kwa languages often spoken in Niger-Congo areas.

Ewe is a Gbe language, also part of the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family, and is spoken by about 2 million people in the Volta Region of south-east Ghana.
