Health Precautions in Ghana
It is essential to take health cautions in Ghana – health care facilities in the country are not up to western standards, and hospitals may be situated far away from many towns and villages.
Food and Water in Ghana
Generally, tap water is only safe to drink in Accra, and everywhere else bottled water should be purchased instead. Ice should also be avoided. Milk is often unpasteurised, so use powdered milk where possible. Avoid undercooked meat and fish, and peel all fruit and vegetables.
Health Risks in Ghana
Cholera is carried through water, while other illness such as sleeping sickness, tick bite fever and malaria are carried by insects. Take precaution at all times, and do not swim in lakes or rivers which may be infected with bilharzia.
Medicine and Doctors in Ghana
There is a 24-clinic at Accra airport, but otherwise the country’s hospitals and medical facilities are few and far between, and often under-equipped and poorly staffed. Facilities are often unsterile, which could pose health risks.
