Ethiopia Wildlife

Ethiopia wildlife provides some of Africa’s most spectacular range of species, and the country is widely regarded as one of the world’s best kept safari secrets.

Many native species face risk of extinction however, due to hunting and habitat loss, and despite conservation efforts to preserve species, numbers reflect a marked decrease in certain animal species.

Animals in Ethiopia

Animals in Ethiopia are surprisingly abundant and diverse, with a large number of species ranging from large predators to small rodents.

There are recorded 242 mammal species found in the country, 28 of which are endemic to Ethiopia.

Native species to be found in Ethiopia include the Walia ibex, the Menelik's bushbuck, the mountain nyala, Swayne's hartebeest and the extremely rare and endangered Simien jackal or Ethiopian wolf.

Other species include giraffe, leopard, hippopotamus, lion, elephant, antelope, rhinoceros, lynx, jackal, hyena, various species of monkey as well as the rare and vulnerable black lion which can be found in the Ethiopia Zoo but faces extinction as the zoo lacks adequate space and funding to handle current numbers.
