Ethiopia Religion

There are a few types of Ethiopia religion – OverlandingAfrica.com offers a chance to explore these religious groups and cultures.

Christianity is practiced by the largest percentage of the population, with the majority practising Orthodox and Protestant denominations, with a smaller percentage of Ethiopian Catholics. Ethiopia is the second oldest Christian country in the world after Armenia, and its roots date back to the 4th Century. Churches in the country date back centuries, and are a fascinating glimpse into ancient Christian practices.

Starting in the country in about 650 AD, Islam is practiced by about 30.9% of the population, and a number of beautiful mosques can be found across the country. The faiths most commonly practiced are Sunni and Sufi. Islam is most prevalent in the Somali and Afar regions and the southern parts of the Oromia region.

There is a very small population of Jewish followers called the Beta Israel or Falasha tribe in the country. These numbers were greater before many left the country for Israel to return to their religious homes.

Traditional beliefs are practiced by a fair percentage of the population, often alongside other religions.
