Ethiopia's People

Ethiopia's people include about 70 different tribal groups.

Ethnic groups tend to be based on languages, and regions in the country. The largest ethnic group is the Oromo group, who are mostly situated in the southern part of the country.

The Amhara and Tigray groups make up a fairly large percentage, and are fairly dominant politically. The Amhara come from the central highlands, while the Tigray live in the northern provinces of the Tigray region.

There are a number of Somali in Ethiopia, totaling about 4.6 million. There is also a small percentage of Falasha, who call themselves Beta Israel, who are Jewish, and many of this group has migrated to Israel.

The very small percentage of Beja who come from the far northern regions and the Sidama of the southern and savanna regions are the ancestors of the earliest known groups that occupied Ethiopia.
