Ethiopia Money & Banking
Ethiopia money & banking mostly uses the the local currency, which is Ethiopian Birr (Br) and cents. Notes come in denominations of Br100, 50, 10, 5 and 1. Coins come in denominations of 50, 25, 10, 5 and 1 cents.
Banks in and around Addis Ababa include Dashen Bank, Nib Bank, United Bank, Bank of Abyssinia and Ethiopia National Bank.
Banks are open from Monday to Thursday between 08h00 and 15h00, Friday between 08h00 and 11h00 and 13h30 and15h00, and Saturday between 08h30 and 11h00.
Generally ATMs do not work with foreign bank cards, so it is a good idea to draw cash from the airport instead, or bring enough cash to exchange, or local currency to use. Travellers cheques can be cashed, generally it is easiest from Dollars, Pounds or Euros, and can take a while.
Western Union and Money Gram branches can be found in the capital of Addis Ababa, and offer a good way to transfer funds fairly easily.
