Ethiopia Languages

There are over 70 Ethiopia languages – OverlandingAfrica.com tours will give you a broad perspective of the diverse languages and dialects spoken in this fascinating country.

English is spoken widely, especially in the urban areas. Many children are taught English from primary school, so younger generations are much more fluent in English. Some of the older generation may not speak English as well, but generally you will be understood when travelling through Ethiopia if you speak English.

Amharic is also widely spoken, and many schools teach lessons in this language. It is spoken most frequently in north-central areas, and is the official working language of Ethiopia.

Oromo is spoken by nearly 25 million Ethiopians, and has a number of dialects which are spoken by various tribes within the Oromo region.

Some ancient languages such as the near-extinct Ge’ez, are only written and are not spoken. Gafat, Weyto, Rer Bare and Mesmes are completely extinct in the country.
