Ethiopia Customs

It may seem daunting to go through Ethiopia customs – OverlandingAfrica.com makes it easier however with a range of tips to help you prepare.

Travellers are allowed to export items purchased in Ethiopia to the value of ETB 500. Exporting of skins and hides and any kind of antique articles such as swords, bibles or similar requires an export certificate however.

Household electronic devices such as DVD players, cameras, cell phones and computer printers must be declared on arrival. Laptops must be declared on arrival and departure. Tape recorders require special customs permits.

Ethiopian Birr local currency can be imported or exported to a value of up to ETB 100 per person. Unlimited foreign currencies can be imported or exported provided travellers declare all currency on arrival in Ethiopia.

The following items are prohibited for import to Ethiopia:

  • Acids, Bio Products or Chemicals
  • Drugs - addictive or Non-Prescription
  • Flammables, explosives or any form of ammunition
