Ethiopia Birds

Ethiopia birds bring many visitors to the country, which is one of Africa’s most important birdwatching countries offering a diverse range of birdlife.

Sadly, many species are in danger of extinction due to the state of Ethiopia’s forests and woodland habitats, which could see a drop in the number of endemic and migratory species to be found in the country.

Birdlife in Ethiopia

Birdlife in Ethiopia includes 816 recorded species, with about 596 endemic species and 224 seasonal migrants including 176 species from the Palearctic.

Endemic species include glue-winged goose, Harwood's francolin, spot-breasted lapwing, yellow-fronted parrot, Prince Ruspoli's turaco, Nechisar nightjar, Degodi lark, Sidamo lark, white-tailed swallow, Abyssinian longclaw, Abyssinian catbird, Stresemann's bush-crow, red-billed pytilia and Ankober serin.

Migrating species include wattled ibis, Rouget’s rail, black-winged lovebird, banded barbet, Abyssinian slaty-flycatcher and Abyssinian black-headed oriole.

Endangered or threatened species include Northern Bald Ibis, Lappet-faced Vulture, Greater Spotted Eagle, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Saker Falcon, Wattled Crane, White-winged Flufftail and Nechisar Nightjar.

Birding Ethiopia

Birding Ethiopia offers some of the most beautiful habitats in Africa, with a diverse range of species to sight and spectacular scenery.
