England Local Phrases

England locals phrases heard on your OverlandingAfrica.com adventure may be very different to the phrases you hear at home.

The English have some of the most interesting slang terms and vocabulary in the world, and many first time visitors may battle to understand locals at first.

Some of the more frequent differences include the following words and phrases:

  • Pants - Trousers
  • Underwear - Pants
  • Petrol - Gas
  • Off Licence - Liquor Store
  • Trainers - Sneakers/Tennis shoes
  • Chips - Fries
  • Crisps - Chips
  • Life - Elevator
  • Line - Queue
  • Fag – Cigarette

There are also a number of interesting rhyming slangs that you will hear across the country, and can sound totally incomprehensible until you get the hang of these expressions.
