England Languages

You will hear a wide number of England languages on your OverlandingAfrica.com tour – most of these include English, with a number of official minority languages and immigrant and foreign languages.

English is spoken widely across the country, with almost every person speaking and understanding English. Accents vary per region, which can make people hard to understand at times, but you will soon get used to this way of talking.

Official minority languages include Welsh, Scottish Gaelic, Lowlands Scots, Cornish and Irish Gaelic. Many of these languages come from Celtic times, and can sound very strange. Many minority groups also speak English in addition to their mother language.

Due to the large number of immigrants in England, there are also a fairly large number of other languages spoken. These include Punjabi, Pahari, Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, Polish, Cantonese, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish, Greek, Arabic, Portuguese, French and Turkish.

Foreign languages also spoken in England include French, German and Spanish. English and Irish sign language is also spoken and understood by a small percentage of the population.
